When the Virgin Had Conceived

Syriac: msheeho natareh l’eedtokh

or msheeho natareh l’eedtokh (Abdallah)

When the Virgin had conceived,
Joseph thought within his heart
to dismiss her quietly, but in sleep an angel came
and spoke in a dream to him:
“Be not afraid, Joseph, David’s son.
Truly this child that she bears
is the One who made the world.”
The Lord, God of all, dwells in the pure Virgin’s womb.
He took flesh, becoming man, of his own will,
to redeem the human race.
Now the promised Savior comes
from his everlasting home
and in David’s daughter dwells,
saving Adam from his tears.
For Christ has fulfilled the words the prophets spoke.
Long-awaited hope!
To his sheepfold he brings back
all those who have gone astray.
With joy they proclaim:
“Praise and bless him who came down.”
He took flesh, becoming man, to save the world
and exalt the human race.

Opening Prayers

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and for ever. Amen.

Lord Jesus, Most High, you are without beginning or end and beyond our understanding. Your angel was sent to righteous Joseph to dispel his fear. Now confirm us in your truth and make us worthy of your salvation. Keep us from doubt and protect our faith, that we may profess your miraculous birth and honor your pure mother Mary and righteous Joseph. We raise glory and thanks to you, to your Father, and to your Holy Spirit, now and forever.

Prayer of Forgiveness (Husoyo)

Proemion

Let us raise glory, honor, and praise to God the Father, who sent his angel in a dream to righteous Joseph; and to the glorious Son, who dwelt in the womb of the pure Virgin; and to the Holy Spirit, who revealed the mystery of the holy Virgin’s conception. To the Good One be glory and honor, on this feast, and all the days of our lives, and forever. Amen.

Sedro

Glory be to you, O Christ our God, you chose the most blessed among women to be your mother, and in a dream you revealed the mystery of your conception to righteous Joseph to whom she was betrothed, filling him with peace.
Today we celebrate the feast of your divine revelation:
The divine revelation that Joseph received dispelling his fear.
The divine revelation that filled all believers with joy.
The divine revelation that removed every doubt from Joseph regarding the Purest of Virgins.
Now, O Lord, we implore you, through the prayers of Mary, your mother, and Joseph, your chosen one, and with the fragrance of this incense, that the celebration of this feast be for our salvation. Sanctify sinners and dispel all doubt and fear. Bring back those who are far and protect those who are near. May joy and peace fill the world, and love and unity dwell in our hearts. May the departed find rest in your heavenly kingdom, and we raise glory and thanks to you, to your Father, and to your Holy Spirit, forever. Amen.

Hymn (Qolo)

O Joseph, Rise, Doubt No Longer

Syriac: soogheeto (ramsho)

O Joseph, rise, doubt no longer.
Mary carries Jesus, God’s Word,
and she remains still a virgin,
yet the mother bearing God’s Son.
Though angels fear to behold him,
you will raise him like your own son.
Since Mary is God’s pure temple,
you will serve him like a high priest.
Receive our prayer like sweet incense
which we offer to our great King.
Now intercede for us, Joseph,
that we may find pardon and peace.

Etro

O Lord, you are the sweet fragrance who fills the whole world. You removed fear from Joseph’s heart and confirmed the truth about Mary’s conception. Accept our incense, fill our souls with joy, and grant rest to all the departed, that we may raise glory and thanks to you, now and forever. Amen.

Holy and immortal Lord, sanctify our minds and purify our consciences, that we may praise you with purity and listen to your Holy Scriptures. To you be glory forever. Amen.

Psalm of the Readings

Syriac: ramremain

Righteous Joseph is fearful
to take Mary as his wife,
but the child whom she carries,
by the Spirit was conceived.
“Do not fear, Son of David!”
said the angel in a dream,
“for the child Mary carries
is the Son of God Most High.”
Lord our God, you accepted
what the just had offered you;
now accept, in your mercy,
our pure sacrifice and prayers.

Epistle

A reading from the Letter of Saint Paul to the Ephesians. Your blessing, Father.

Glory to the Lord of Paul and the apostles! May the mercy of God descend upon the reader and the listeners and upon this parish and her children forever. Amen.

Brothers and Sisters:
This is the reason that I Paul am a prisoner for Christ Jesus for the sake of you Gentiles — for surely you have already heard of the commission of God’s grace that was given me for you, and how the mystery was made known to me by revelation, as I wrote above in a few words, a reading of which will enable you to perceive my understanding of the mystery of Christ. In former generations this mystery was not made known to humankind, as it has now been revealed to his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit: that is, the Gentiles have become fellow heirs, members of the same body, and sharers in the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel. Of this gospel I have become a servant according to the gift of God’s grace that was given me by the working of his power. Although I am the very least of all the saints, this grace was given to me to bring to the Gentiles the news of the boundless riches of Christ, and to make everyone see what is the plan of the mystery hidden for ages in God who created all things; so that through the church the wisdom of God in its rich variety might now be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly places. This was in accordance with the eternal purpose that he has carried out in Christ Jesus our Lord, in whom we have access to God in boldness and confidence through faith in him. I pray therefore that you may not lose heart over my sufferings for you; they are your glory.
(Ephesians 3:1-13)

Praise be to God always!

Gospel

Alleluia! Alleluia!
“He made him overseer of his house, and put him in charge of all he had.”
(Gen 39:4)
Alleluia!

Before the proclamation of the Gospel of our Savior, announcing life for our souls, we offer this incense and ask for your mercy, O Lord.

Peace be with you.

And with your spirit.

From the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Saint Matthew, who proclaimed life to the world.
Let us listen to the proclalation of life and salvation for our souls.

Remain silent, O listeners, for the Holy Gospel is about to be proclaimed to you.
Listen and give glory and thanks to the Word of the living God.

The Apostle wrote:
Now the birth of Jesus the Messiah took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been engaged to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. Her husband Joseph, being a righteous man and unwilling to expose her to public disgrace, planned to dismiss her quietly. But just when he had resolved to do this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, for the child conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” All this took place to fulfill what had been spoken by the Lord through the prophet: “Look, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel,” which means, “God is with us.” When Joseph awoke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him; he took her as his wife, but had no marital relations with her until she had borne a son; and he named him Jesus.
(Matthew 1:18-25)

This is the truth! Peace be with you!

Praise and blessings to Jesus Christ, our Lord and God, for giving us his words of life.
